The Study by Michael Card

Socrates once said, "when the soul hears music, it
drops its' best guard." That, for me, is one of the best
descriptions of the power that music has. With music it is
possible to open a door in the heart of the listener. Once
inside, the musician can either beautify the interior of that
soul, or desecrate that most holy of places. Often if you can
get someone to sing something, you can get them to believe
it. This has been used both for good as well evil throughout
history. All this is to say that music is a powerful key.
Today I asked my son, Will, what he was feeling as
he listened to a piece of music. "It feels like I'm flying on
wings," he said with his eyes clamped shut. His description
points to another power music has; the power to transport
us. Once again this power can be used for good or evil.
How many times, in the midst of worry or
grief, has a song lifted you out of that dark
place and left you in another better place, a
place with more light and air. Conversely,
how many times have you witnessed the
grimaced faces of young and sometimes not
so young people as they listened to the often
torturous music variously described as heavy
metal or death rock? These poor people seem
not to be in their own skins as they
experience the cacophonies. And indeed
many have chosen suicide on the advice of
the lyrics of this dark music, or simply
perhaps as a way of ending the despair and
pain in their souls which the music so
gruesomely magnifies.
Often, while I'm on the road, parents ask me about
the effects of rock music on their children. Usually they
themselves are a product of the generation, the era of rock,
so I sometimes get the feeling that they are asking as much
for themselves as their children. After giving the matter a
lot of thought over the years, I have concluded that the
greatest long-term danger of rock/metal music is not the
worldly value system it represents, or even the often dark
associations it has that affects its' listener. The worst lasting
effect it has is that it teaches kids not to listen at all. It
conditions them to tune out the words in favor of the
overpowering music. That can have a devastating effect on
the soul.
Music can cause us to drop our best guard; it can
unlock a door into our soul and it can transport us to
another place; it can rob of us the ability to listen to the
words. Music also has the power of shaping our lives and
value systems. By this I mean music can be so powerful andconsuming a force that we can give our lives to it. This I've
seen too many times in my experience as a musician. A
person’s language, dress, style of living and values, all
dictated by a style of music. Once, while I way paying for
some gasoline, the teller asked, "You're a musician aren't
you?"
To which I replied in horror, "How did you know?"
"You just looked like one," he said with a smile not
knowing he had just ruined my whole day!
So what are we to do with this power, this dynamite
that can be used both to destroy lives as well as blast away
stubborn mountains that may stand in our way? Once again,
as with any important question, we turn to the life of Jesus
for the answer. The Word tells us that everything must be
brought under submission to Christ, and this especially
applies to the power of music.
But what does it mean to say that we are to bring the
power of music into submission to Christ? Essentially it
means that we are determining to make
music, like every other area of our lives,
subservient to Him. That we will not allow
this area of our lives to detract or in any
other way take away from the purpose of
the gospel. At the same time we are also
committing to the notion that music can
be, indeed must be, made to serve Christ,
His kingdom and His people.
This translates into the world of
homeschooling as we seek to use music to
enrich the lives of our children, to teach
them that the beauty of music can speak as
well of the beauty of God, that they must
be aware of the power music holds but at the same time,
they need not fear it as long as it keeps its' proper place.
Finally, the greatest power inherent in music is its'
ability to facilitate worship. Again, this power is often
mishandled, even sadly by Christians, and used to focus
worshipful attention towards the musician and away from
Christ. This we must maintain is betrayal of the darkest and
most severe kind. A betrayal of the beauty of God, an act
of idolatry.
Therefore, we must pass on to our children a biblical
value system which is shaped by an awareness of the power
and true purpose of music. We must listen along with them
to the music of their generation and help them make
responsible choices in terms of what they will listen to and
why. Above all, we must, by the witness of our own lives,
demonstrate to them how music can be used to serve Christ
and worship Him in Spirit and truth. 􀀇

Characteristics of Music

Description: E-mail

"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil."(1Th 5:21-22) ... This verse gives us God’s mind about several things. we are to hold tightly ALL good things AND stay away from ALL evil things that fail the test. I think all things include our music, don’t you?
The music consists of melody, harmony, and rhythm. Now I want us to learn the characteristics of the sound of music, the lyrics of music, and the delivery of music. Then I want us to learn how to sift them through God’s Bible grid.
1. The Characteristics of the Sound of Music
a. The sound of music is a language
  1. Without words, the sound of music speaks to us. Music is not amoral or neutral.
    • One note is neutral, but a musical combination of notes sends a message. In the same sense paint is neutral, but a painting has a message, an alphabetic letter is neutral but a word contains a message.
    • Straight rhythm produces a different effect than does backbeat rhythm. The former is natural and wholesome; the latter is unnatural and sensual.
  2. The sound of music affects us emotionally
    • The sound may make us sad, cheerful, patriotic, peaceful, calm, scared, full of suspense, uplifting, hyped up, tense, romantic, lustful, high, or rebellious.
    • Movie makers use the sound of music to give reality and life to the script.
  3. The sound of music affects us physically
    • The sound may make us feel like marching, tap our toe, relaxing, dancing, moving sensually, or even fighting.
    • People often choose their music by their mood (according to Web blogs) confirming that the sound of music affects us emotionally and physically.
b. The effects of the sound of music are diverse
  1. Its effects may be good or bad, moral or immoral, decent or indecent, spiritual or fleshly.
  2. God is clearly against evil.
    • (Psalm 34:14) "Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it."
    • (1Thes. 5:22) "Abstain from all appearance of evil."
    • (2Timoth. 2:22) "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
  3. Because the sound of music may affect us adversely, not every sound of music pleases the Lord.
2. The Characteristics of Music’s Lyrics
a. The lyrics are the words of a song.
  1. The words of a song may be Godly, wholesome, edifying, vague, ungodly, filthy, or blasphemous.
  2. The words may praise God or curse him. They may promote virtue or vice. They may be patriotic or rebellious. The words of a song come from the heart of the author. Jesus said, (Luke 6:45) "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh."
b. Lyrics must match the sound or it is foolishness
  1. Gentle music does not fit with rebellious words. Neither does a lively march fit with mournful words.
  2. With the same reasoning we see that spiritual words are incompatible with fleshly backbeat music. They send conflicting messages.
3. The Characteristics of Music’s Delivery
a. Singing styles
  1. The singer may sing straight, breathy, sliding, scooping, below pitch, showy, etc.
  2. Styles other than straight (i.e., traditional or natural) attract attention and often make the song more sensual or appealing to the flesh.
b. The atmosphere
This is a very important factor to consider in music preparation and presentation, otherwise the music is going to be unvaluable.
Many people use the followings:
1.      The atmosphere may be calm, lit, dark, romantic, dazzling, flashing, eerie, nightclub-type, worldly, demonic.
2.      The atmosphere at a rock concert or a nightclub is designed to contribute to the sensual fleshly music. A reverent, respectful, God-centred atmosphere at church harmonizes with godly, straight, edifying music.
Here we must be care.
c. The musician’s appearance
  1. His dress and outward look may be neat, modest, immodest, sensuous, crude, effeminate, wild, or demonic-looking.
  2. His appearance is not accidental. It intentionally matches the sound and the lyrics, or sometimes just the sound. If the sound is calm and uplifting, the musician’s appearance will generally match it. If the sound is backbeat and sensual, the musician’s appearance will likely be wild or immodest.
4. We Must Sift Music’s Characteristics Through the Bible Grid
a. What is the Bible grid?
  1. The Bible grid is God’s standard by which we are to live. Here are a few of the many verses that make up that grid.
    • (Romans 12:2) "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
    • (Romans 13:14) "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."
    • (2Cor 6:17) "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,"
    • (Ephes 5:11) "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them."
    • (1Pet 1:14-16) "As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."
  2. Here is what God said we must do. (Read text 1Th 5:21-22)
    • Prove or test all things, including music. See if it meets God’s standards. It must not be worldly, fleshly, lustful, unclean, or a work of darkness, but holy.
    • Hold fast the good that meets God’s standards.
    • Abstain from (keep away from) every form of evil.
b. What characteristics of music pass the Bible grid?
  1. The sound must not be worldly, fleshly, lustful, unclean, a work of darkness, but holy. If the sound mimics the backbeat music of a nightclub, tavern, disco, or rock concert, where the works of darkness thrive, (even if the backbeat is soft), it will not sift through God’s grid. The backbeat is unnatural, rebellious, and appealing to the sensual flesh.
  2. The lyrics must not be worldly, fleshly, lustful, unclean, works of darkness, but holy. If they contain even one swearword or dirty word, they fail to pass through the Bible grid. If they are "Christian" but vague, they may also fail.
    • The term "crossover artist" may refer to musical performers and groups that are Christian music artists, who many times originally are marketed through Christian record labels, radio stations, churches and other Christian media but who start selling in mainstream secular markets as well.... The first major artist crossover was by Amy Grant, with her 1985 album Unguarded and 1991 hit song "Baby Baby" from the highest selling Christian album Heart in Motion. www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/crossover_(music)Christian_crossover_artists See also, The Battle for Christian Music, by Tim Fisher, p. 188
  3. The delivery must not be worldly, fleshly, lustful, unclean, a work of darkness, but holy. Do the style, atmosphere, and appearance of the singer pass God’s standard? If it is fashioned after the former lusts of the ungodly, reject it.
  4. The lyrics of Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) may pass the Bible grid, but if its sound and delivery fail the test, we must reject it - even if we happen to like it!
Conclusion: we have examined the characteristics of music. Music is more than just words. Music is sound, lyrics, and delivery. Each of these characteristics can be good or bad, decent or indecent. All three must be right for the music to be acceptable to God. Read our text again. Music is not a matter of preference or taste. It is a matter of right and wrong. Will you begin evaluating your music by God’s standard?

The Psychological Effects of Heavy Metal Music

Heavy Metal Music Fans always blame that, “Heavy metal is often needlessly blamed for causing psychological problems”. There must be something behind this arguments between two sides. Simply, we learn from here that there must be the truth from a certain side.
Heavy metal is a harder, more intense form of rock music. The term was first introduced in the late 1960s but the genre only really came into its own in the 80s with bands like Slayer, Metallica and Guns ‘n’ Roses at its forefront. Many have voiced their concern regarding the potentially negative psychological effects that listening to this form of music has on the development of adolescents.
Limiting Factors
As with many psychological questions, the problem of cause and effect rears its head. A 1994 study by Took and Weiss cited by the Connect Seward County website found that adolescents with a taste for heavy metal were more likely to perform poorer in school and engage in sexual activity and use of controlled substances. These behaviors would happen anyway, but also the intensity of soundtrack may be concerned in high amount.
Another study, cited by the MUSICA website, supports this idea. It found that low-performing, rebellious adolescents who listened to heavy metal had exhibited behavioral problems after being introduced to heavy metal music.
Negativity
Listening to heavy metal may reinforce existing depressive or anti-social feelings and thoughts, reports Iowa State University, and cause those feelings and thoughts to reoccur in the future. A study by Wooten in 1992 cited by the Connect Seward County website reported that participants with psychiatric disorders who were fans of heavy metal were healed after being exposed to the classical music.
Relationships
According to the researches from Universities and Institutes, there is no evidence that fans of non-heavy metal feel socially isolated. But the main problem is for all fans of heavy metal. Mostly the heavy metal music fans tend to engage in sexual behaviors very early before the planned time.  (SONG OF SOLOMON 1:7)
In general, the quality of relationship of adolescents in their peer groups is mainly affected by the type of music they are used to listen when they are gathered. Compared to other adolescent groups, the peer groups of heavy metal fans exert a more powerful influence in bad relationships.
Release
According to the last posted lesson (last post), classical the music reduces the blood pressure, is the medicine for the heart and helps in psychological problems for the fans. This subconsciously helps them to cope with the stress and demands of daily life. According to a studies and researches of State Universities, many fans of heavy metal music, tend to show high level of hungry and taking heavy actions to minor things. The classical music fans listen to it when they feel angry. A research found that heavy metal fans show higher levels of anger after listening to this music.
Other studies from Universities suggest that music can normalize whatever emotional state a listener is feeling at the time of listening.

Growth

In a 2003 study carried out by researchers, classical music was found to have a beneficial effect on plant leaf growth. Maize corn exposed to the high sound levels of playing Piano loud speakers showed an 86.2 percent improvement in leaf area. The measured fresh weight of the corn also improved by significant amount. Researchers found the same effect on kidney beans and green beans. The shocking results were obtained from the reverse action by using heavy metal music! It was reverse results!

Germination
Some plant seeds, like those from kidney beans, also benefited from what the researchers termed "slow music." In fact, the kidney bean seeds exposed to this slow music germinated at least 60 percent faster than their control group cousins. This effect was also noted in green beans, though maize corn germinated slower than the control group seeds.
In general heavy metal music is very destructive for human health and all living things in general.
Not only for human, but also for other living things, as we have seen the examples above.
The warning is given; try to stay away from this type of music!
It is destructive for sure.
